Stephanie and I were excited to be able to try some new foods on our trip. I don't have pics of all of them, but will share the best of the ones we have. The one that comes to mind that we would see on TV and want try is poke. The cafe inside the resort had different poke bowls, so we tried that one of our first nights there. I had the ahi tuna poke bowl and Stephanie had crispy shrimp bowl. We both loved them. Later in the stay Steph would have an ahi tuna and crab poke bowl but she said that one wasn't as good. I was also excited that there was a taco truck at the resort so we had that supper one night. I had fish taco and Steph had the pork taco. I enjoyed mine more but that's sort of to be expected as that is more my lane.
Maybe Steph's favorite thing was going to the food truck area near the airport. There was a minimum of 10 food trucks (sorry I didn't count I was hungry!). She was reading online reviews on the way there. She got all experimental with some new foods. The craziest thing was buying a fresh picked coconut for some coconut water. She doesn't even like coconut. I am the coconut person, but I don't care for fresh coconut. (Steph: I LIKE FRESH coconut or dried "coconut chips"; I DON'T like the sweetened, shredded kind. However, I also DIDN'T enjoy the fresh [warm] coconut water. Others were enjoying it, so I wanted to try it, too!) I don't know that I am keeping a list, but I enjoy fresh fish and I had a new one. I had kampachi. It's closest comparison is tuna, although it's flesh is yellow not red like tuna.
Sorry no taco pics but picture of the menu board at the truck at the resort.
Lobster Mac & Cheese at a restaurant near the resort. In Steph's words "The lobster is doing all the work" meaning the mac and cheese wasn't tasty.
This was Steph's meal at the same restaurant. Called Hong Kong Street Noodles. She really liked this. (I did too). It reminded me of the taste of what my Mom made as a kid called Chop Suey.
I guess a little hard to see but here is the Kampachi that I had one night at the Bistro on the resort property. Stephanie had a pork Milanese which I thought was good. In the picture we have all you can see is the greens on top, not the pork.
This is what I had when we went to the food truck park. Shrimp Gyro. Not sure why I decided to go Greek, but it sounded good and it was.
This is the first of two things Steph got from the same food truck. Steamed Bun with pork belly.
This was her main dish. Crispy garlic noodles with pork belly and a 6 minute egg. This was very tasty (the few bites I got).
Fresh picked coconut.
Last food pic. In my pre-Maui research I kept reading about a place called Leoda's that had amazing pies. We passed it on the way to our condo that we stayed at for the extra 2 days. So on the way back to the airport to leave I saw it again and Steph encouraged me to turn around. They weren't even open yet but there was a line. Nothing like a little pie before you get ready to leave paradise, right? I had the key lime (left) and Steph had the chocolate macadamia nut (right). They also had pot pies so we split a chicken pot pie (sorry not pictured). And yes mine was very good. Would be dangerous to live to close to them!
Last I will leave you with the best of the explore pictures from the other non-golf mornings. Most were taken along the beach front in either direction from the resort. There is a walking path that goes quite a ways in either direction from Grand Wailea. In both directions they end at a beach.
Learned about tide pools on our SU trip to Newport Beach.
Tide pool close up.
Not from our resort, but still cool none the less.
This was from a public beach a little ways down from our condo. In this area most of the waterfront was blocked either by resorts or condos.
The resort chapel at dusk.
Stay tuned. Tomorrow's excursion is big!!
